Introduced in EPM v11.1.2.2, Smart Query, a feature of Hyperion Smart View, still doesn’t get a lot of attention; and it should, because it’s the key to a number of analytical capabilities that Essbase users never had before.

Smart Query goes beyond the capabilities of standard Smart View. To put it more simply, Smart Query is an analysis type like the Essbasse Ad Hoc query tool or Smart View forms, but the cool difference is that Smart Query focuses on “set-based analysis.” It allows you to create save and share queries with:

  • User customizable sets
  • User customizable filters
  • User defined calculated rows and columns

For example, you could create a report that identifies the top 20 products based on sales or a report that shows, which products had profit 20% higher in Q4 than in Q3.

If you’re ready to dive in and pay attention to Smart Query, watch for a step-by-step “how to” demonstration of Smart Query. I will start with the basics and cover all the techniques required to do these analytical tasks.
